2015

Evening Storm On the National Mall Winter Tracery Ice 2 Wil_Scott1 (2)Winter Ice 2Parisian Cafe2015 is off to a strong start. A lot happened in late 2014, including acceptance into numerous shows around the country (Texas being a new spot for me.), and an honorable mention award in a show at the Maryland Federation of Art. But this year is really starting fast. I have a photo called Parisian Cafe (actually a portrait of my wife) in a show called "Contemplation" at the PH21 Gallery in Budapest. At the same time Ice 2 is in "A Winter's Tale" at the 1650 Gallery in Los Angeles. And, two days ago I was accepted into "Water" at the Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, CO. I also received an honorable mention for Winter at the MFA.  Finally, I have a photo, Snowstorm on the National Mall in "Stormy Weather" at the Annapolis Maritime Museum. Here are the works.

Spring Shows

SpiralMy works have been accepted into some new shows. "$29," an image of a rundown motel in New Hampshire is in "Focal Point: Fine Art and Creative Photography," a national, juried show at the Maryland Federation of Art in Annapolis from May 23 until June 15, 2014. "Midsummer Dream," " Winter's Fire," and "Spiral" are all in "Less Is More: Small Works in a Great Space" at the Mitchell Gallery of St. Johns College in Annapolis from May 28 until June 15.

New exhibitions:

Midsummer Dream was selected for the third time recently into a juried, international show. This time Robert Hirsch included it in "Illumine" at the Darkroom Gallery in Essex Junction, VT. He said, "While I respect photography’s ability to secure a two-dimensional representation of outer reality, I strongly favor images that get beneath the surface of a subject by linking the visible with the invisible as a means of looking inside an experience." This is my intention as an artist, and it is gratifying to learn that others consider that I have been successful.

Midsummer Dream will be on view at the Kiernan Gallery in Lexington, VA this month and at the Darkroom Gallery in Essex Junction, VT. The juror of the show at the Darkroom, Eddie Soloway, said something I'd like to share. He said, "I did my best to approach the submitted images with open eyes and an open mind. I love all kinds of photography, way outside the realm of what I personally create. I was looking for images that made me go “WOW”, and especially, a quiet “wow”. I responded to images that resonated about a place or conveyed a feeling. I appreciated images where the craft of photography was integrated into the finished piece. These fifty-eight images are an exciting mix of what people with vision can create.

Kiernan Gallery, Lexington, VA

I'm having a good week or two.  Just had a recent cloud study accepted in a national juried show at the Kiernan Gallery.  Their shows are juried by important members of the contemporary photography community, and the gallery owner's standards are very high.  The show runs from Jan.2-Feb.1, 2014.  Their website is http://kiernangallery.com/.  About the Artist:

Wil Scott, our artist of the month, is the Head of Adult Programs at the National Gallery.  With five staff lecturers and 125 volunteer docents, this department is responsible for the vast majority of gallery tours and auditorium lectures offered to the general public.  The department is also responsible for orienting over 4 million visitors each year with the help of two paid staff and almost 200 art information volunteers.  In his 29 years on the staff of the Gallery, Dr. Scott has lectured extensively, written exhibition catalogue entries, brochures, wall texts, and recorded tour scripts, and appeared in educational videos.  From 1989 until 2003, he was the coordinator of the adult docents; recruiting, selecting, training and evaluating all in collaboration with other staff members.

Before beginning his career at the National Gallery, Dr. Scott received his doctorate in American Art at the University of Delaware and held a Pre-doctoral Fellowship at the Smithsonian Institution.  In 2001 he was an Ailsa Mellon Bruce Curatorial Fellow at the National Gallery, researching a paper on the avant-garde theatre in America during the early twentieth-century.

When not working at the Gallery, he serves on the Planning Commission of the City of Annapolis (29 years), serves on the boards of the Mitchell Gallery at St. John’s College, the Maryland Federation of Art, and the Anne Arundel County Arts Council, rides his bike, and takes photographs of the Chesapeake Bay and beyond. His photographs are frequently exhibited in juried exhibitions in and around Annapolis and as far afield as Los Angles, Portland, OR, Switzerland, and Burlington, Vermont.

This week has brought more good news.  I received acceptance into a show, Urban Landscapes, at the 1650 Gallery in Los Angeles.  One of my personal favorites, "Manayunk Rhythms" (2009) was selected by the gallery owner.  The show runs from July 13-Aug. 20.  A few days later I learned that three of my works, "Gathering Storm" (2012), "Memories of Spain" (2012), and "What Was Will Be Again" (2012) were accepted by John Shipman, directed of the university gallery at the University of Maryland for the show AACO: Artists of Anne Arundel County.  The show will be at the Quiet Waters Park facility in Annapolis from Aug. 21-Oct. 12.

Black Box Gallery, Portland, OR

Last week had plenty of new developments for me.  It ended with the notification that on of my photos, "College Creek (Annapolis)," was among 24 images selected in a juried show, Field Notes: Landscape and Architecture, to be held at the Black Box Gallery in Portland, Oregon.  Black Box is located in the vibrant arts district in Portland and is a highly selective fine arts venue for photography only.  I've been trying repeatedly to meet their high standards and am honored by the selection of my work (attached here).College Creek

MD Art @ College Park

The day after receiving news of my first showing in Europe, I was notified that I was selected to participate in MD Arts @ College Park.  This is a juried show of artists from the state of Maryland to be show at the campus art gallery of the University of Maryland.  More than six hundred Maryland artists submitted entries.  I was fortunate to be one of slightly more than one hundred selected.  The show will be on view from June 14 to August 2.  My photo, "What Was Will Be Again," is attached here.  I'm sure this is going to be a tremendous showing for Maryland artists, and I hope everyone who reads this can attend. What Was Will Be Again

I have been juried into an international show in Switzerland called Maires du monde (Marshes of the World), sponsored by the Fondation du Grand-Cachot de Vent.  A link to all 50 chosen entries is here ( http://www.grand-cachot.ch/#!marais-du-monde-les-rsultats/c11sa).  This is my first international juried exhibition outside the U.S.  My accepted entry was "End of Winter" (2012).End of Winter

National Gallery of Art

Today, Feb. 11, I was honored to give a talk about my work as a part of a series at the National Gallery called "Works in Progress."  The feedback from such an informed audience was extremely valuable, and I want to thank everyone who was able to attend.

Good Bye 2012

What Was Will Be Again At the end of the year we had some foggy days, and I took the opportunity to visit an empty parcel near my house.  This image captures the sense of decay that permeates the place, nature's seasons and man's folly wrapping together.
